Hello, I have been using Firefox for years without problems, but recently this came about out of the blue: for every action typed into the window, be it a search string or URL, or even about:config, Firefox opens a new window.

I didn't tweak any configuration options, it's not any of the extensions (removed those) nor a theme (using default). Also, this https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1293906 was not useful.

This is an extremely annoying issue. Please help.

For reasons unbeknownst to me, Enter was behaving as Shift+Enter (the problem appeared seemingly only in Firefox). Traced the problem back in time to a presumably incorrect customization of my keyboard mapping. Sort-of fixed the xmodmap issue, and the Firefox "anomaly" went away. It was a case of PEBKAC. Sorry for troubling, and thanks for taking time to respond.

You can try Firefox from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution to see if it behaves differently.

You can create a new profile as a quick test to see if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
