I've seen this question a lot of times, but I still can't solve my problem. My native language is Dutch, but I only use English for my software.

So my OS is in English and Thunderbird is in English and I've downloaded the English version of Lightning (https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/lightning/) but no matter how often I reinstall, it always ends up in Dutch.

I had a Dutch language pack installed (for spelling), which I also removed before reinstalling, but still no luck.

Language packs have got nothing to do with spelling. For spell check purposes you'd need to get a dictionary. Installing the Dutch language pack may have caused a problem though. Try to create a new profile using profile manager, and then start Thunderbird with the new profile using profile manager. Does the problem occur in the new profile? https://support.mozilla.org/kb/using-multiple-profiles
