cannot open a PDF recived file reads as gibberish
when I open the PDF file it is all symbols and character but if I save the file and open it in a different software beside Mozilla I can read it

Thunderbird cannot open PDFs, it needs a helper application for that. You'll need to tell Thunderbird what that helper application is. In your case you may have set the wrong app. Check your settings. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Actions_for_attachment_file_types#Changing_the_settings_for_attachment-handling_actions
