If you manually install an addon (by adding the XPI), does it update normally?

I have been modifying Firefox to make it how I want it to be. However, to save time, I installed all my addons to a separate profile by installing them by XPI. Will they update, or will I have to download it from Firefox's website to update them? Also, I modified the files on some of them, so they are unsigned, but I have skipped the signature checks, so would I need to update the modified addons manually, or will they update on their own and I will have to re-modify the files on each update?

You would normally disable automatic updating if you modify an extension because the updated version replaces your modified version and thus makes you lose the changes. You will have to repeat the edits each time you update an extension that you have modified.

Fortunately, I have done only minor edits to the addons, so I have no problems with redoing it each update. Thank you for the help!

You may run in to problems in future Firefox versions with unsigned addons. That may mean either changing the type of Firefox used or reverting to the signed addon.

Note that you can consider to get your modified version of the extension signed. You would have use use another ID in the install.rdf file and have the extension unlisted.
