Having trouble with my Charter Spectrum mail account. I am able to receive e-mails, but cannot send them. When I send a mail, I get the "Login to server mobile.charter.net failed" message. However, I believe I have the correct setting for SMTP server. Charter Spectrum says I should have mobile.charter.net set as the SMTP server, port 587 selected, SSL enabled, and the authentication password should be the same as my IMAP incoming for the account.

So when I get this message about login to server failed - I re-enter the same account password, and get the same message result. Why would I be able to receive e-mails, but not send using the same server and password?

I was able to go onto Charter Spectrum website and login and send and receive e-mails from their web mail app. Although, I hate using it, and would much rather use TBird.

Hello smorele, Yes, I used that page to configure my settings in Thunderbird. It receives e-mail fine, but does not send. On sending, it continues to ask for a password, but does not accept the password when I enter it (asks for password again). Thanks, CBARIOU

Make sure you have mobile.charter.net on port 587, SSL/TLS security (not STARTTLS, the usual setting for this port). Start Windows in safe mode and see if sending still fails; this will check for the possible interference of a security program.

Check to see that the Charter account is actually trying to send on mobile.charter.net, not on the smtp server associated with a different account: Tools/Account Settings, select the Charter account in the left pane, look at Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the lower right pane.

Also, check Tools/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords for any incorrect or obsolete passwords.

I figured it out - finally!

For username - Spectrum's setup site says this is your full charter account e-mail address... however, I had just the prefix of the e-mail address (cbariou) there, not the full address. I noticed that, changed it, and now it works again.

I knew it had to be something simple.

Thanks to all for your assistance - and I'm glad it was a stupid mistake on my part.
