You may be seeing a recently discovered bug - the symptom is that if you previously attached a file, but the previous folder no longer exists because it was deleted or renamed, when you later try to attach a file using the Write window's "Attach" button, it will silently fail. That is, clicking the button will appear to do nothing. The bug should be fixed in the next release.

In the meantime, a workaround is to drag-and-drop the file onto the Write window.

Or, if you don't mind changing Thunderbird's Advanced Settings:

- In the settings > general > Config Editor, search for: "mail.compose.attach.dir".

- The value (path) here must be changed to one that is still available (for example C:).

- Close and exit Thunderbird, then restart it.

Modified by Lin

I made the change to "mail.compose.attach.dir". (changed to C:\) I was able to make an attachment. HOWEVER: 3 of my email accounts show no or 1 message. And help greatly appreciated. TIA Tbird: 157.0.1 64bit Windows 11 latest update. Herb

As a followup. After I made the change to "mail.compose.attach.dir". (changed to C:\)

One account's mail box shows 136 messages in the Inbox but I only see the contents of one message on the screen.

Another account shows 376 messages but only the content of one shows on the screen.

Same is true for Inbox and Sent folders.

Update: I fixed the seeing only one message problem. A filter setting apparently got changed inadvertantly.

Thanks, Lin, for your reply. I had this problem too, and editing the config setting fixed it for me, too.

But why does Thunderbird behave this way? I understand that Attach starts with the previously used attachment folder, but if it can't find that folder, rather than behaving as if I did nothing when I click Attach, I think TB should use a folder it can find, such as the parent of the previous attachment folder or the user's temp folder.

As i already said, it's a bug. The bug has been fixed.

Whilst I don't have this problem my wife does. Her profile is 15.9GB, mine is only 7.95GB Could this be contributing to the problem. Both computers are using the latest version of TB

As I mentioned above, it's a bug that's been fixed. A workaround is described above. The fix will be included in the next release, due this week.

Could someone maybe post here once the fix gets released?

I just encountered this too after deleting two pictures from an email. The folder that contained them does still exist though.

In case it helps, I went to mail.compose.attach.dir and noticed that it has an Edit icon at the RHS (like all the others) but to the RHS of that, there's now a Bin icon visible (which can't be deleted). I hope that doesn't indicate that the folder is scheduled for deletion at some point??
