My gmail opens a blank page now. Just happened today 6/26/2020 after my laptop crashed ... blue screen

How do you usually get to Gmail? For example, using the Apps icon on Google search, or a bookmark, etc.

A hard crash may corrupt some Firefox data. Could you try clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, click the lock icon at the left end of the address bar. After a moment, a "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button should appear at the bottom. Go ahead and click that.

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

I tried that twice. Gmail still comes up with a blank page. It used to load automatically whenever I clicked on the icon on the home page of Firefox.

I can access it via Chrome. Only Firefox comes up blank. As I said, beginning today. I've never had the problem before.

So the links in my last reply also come up blank?

Are you already logged in to your account, or was the normal behavior before this started that Google would redirect to the login page?

Neither of the links work in Firefox. It only works if I use a "New Private Window." But I didn't have to mess around with that before the crash. When I opened Firefox (my default browser) my top sites would appear, Gmail Icon among them, and all I had to do is click on it. No logging in required.

This is a useful clue. Here are two differences between regular and private windows:

(1) Storage is not shared

Regular windows use persistent disk-based storage while private windows use temporary memory-based storage. Could you try this storage diagnostic (in a regular window) to see whether it reports any problems with storage on your Firefox after the crash:

(2) Some extensions might not be running

Individual extensions can be disabled in private windows even if they are enabled in regular windows. You can check the Add-ons page to see whether any extensions lack the purple mask icon, which could point to those as things to try disabling in regular windows to see whether that makes any difference in accessing Gmail.

That combination of results is normal for a private window, but not normal for a regular window. If you get that in a regular window, the files in your storage folder may be damaged, which can cause various weird side effects.

The results for the regular window are all good. I still can't get gmail to come up with anything but a blank page there. I've checked extensions, applications and just don't see any clues to the problem.

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates your extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Nope. No difference. Gmail click displays a blank page and no attempt to go anywhere or give any other info as to what's going on. Just nothing.

Could you try opening the Network Monitor tool in the lower part of the tab on some page like this one before navigating to Gmail. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Web Developer > Network
  • (menu bar) Tools > Web Developer > Network
  • (Windows) Ctrl+Shift+e

Toward the right side of the tools you'll find al little gear icon. Click that and turn on Persist Logs if needed.

Then when you load Gmail through the address bar or a bookmark, Firefox should start listing all the files it is requesting, along with information about whether the request was successful.

I'm attaching an example of what I usually see in two different scenarios (signed-out and signed-in). It's very wide, so you could right-click > Open Link in New Tab to get it scaled to your browser window.

With the Network Monitor open, could you test what happens if you paste this to the address bar and press Enter to load it:

https://gmail.com/

It should 302 redirect to

https://www.google.com/gmail/

and that should 302 redirect to

https://mail.google.com/mail/

and of course that should load, although it sounds as though there's something blocking it in regular windows but not private windows.
