I can't get firefox to check spelling. I have looked at all the advice and it says to right click in a text box (like the one I am typing in) and an option to add dictionaries will come up but this does not happen. When I right clidk I get 'undo, cut, copy paste and select all and nothing else.' Why?

The dictionaries for Firefox are at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/language-tools/

The language packs listed there is for the UI.

Dear James Thank you for your efforts but none of this information that is already on the web is working because the very first instruction does not work. It is nothing I am doing wrong - it says 1) Right click any text box containing more than one line (like the one I am typing in now) When I do this (like I just did now) there is no option 'check spelling' or 'languages'. I only have (like I said in my first post) Undo Cut Copy Paste Delete Select All Inspect Element I can't select Spell Check or Languages if they are not available to select?

You can enable or disable spell checking globally:

  • Options/Preferences -> General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"

You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages sub menu. At least one dictionary should be installed and have a check mark to indicate that it is selected.

  • open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.

The spelling checker is enabled if [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a checkmark.

You can check the layout.spellcheckDefault pref on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Thanks for your help. "Check my spelling as I type" is ticked and it is not working. I think this is the third time I have said this but if I right click in a text box I DO NOT get any option besides the ones listed above - no Languages option or DIctionary option is available. Unfortunately my degree is in Mathematics not computer science and therefore this issue is beyond me and it seems it is beyond you as well so I will have to take my $40 yearly donation and move to the dark side where they have spell check. If this ever gets resolved let me know as I like Mozilla.

Hi, Instead of 'moving to the dark side' - would you give it one more try to stay in the sunshine  ?

Type in the adress bar about:config (promise to be careful, if asked)

Type and look for the preference :

layout.spellcheckDefault

and you can set its value to either : Spell Checker Off : 0 (zero, which you definately don't want) Check Only Multi-Line Input Boxes : 1 Check Multi and Single Line Input Boxes : 2

Then close and restart Firefox.

Any good  ?

A website can disable the Firefox spell checker via a spellcheck="false" attribute, but this forum doesn't do that, so at least it should work in the text area where you type a reply.

Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.

  • do NOT remove "personal data" When you uninstall the current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (64-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (32-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data When you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data When you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then you can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.
