There are two, arguably three, sets of settings for your type sizes. 1. For reading the text in messages there are settings inside Thunderbird. 3. When composing your own messages, you can set the font to be used. But this is best left at the defaults, and the display settings used instead. I'm not sure that any of these will let you choose '''bold''' fonts as such, but I would be confident that you can find typeface and a size that will do the job.
