Junk Folder Corrupted

This has happened several times before, but I have never managed to get this properly resolved. I am hoping that this is a problem that can be fixed in a future release of Thunderbird.

My junk mail controls are set so that the junk mail for all my accounts (about a dozen) is sent to a single junk folder in local folders. It's been like this for 5 years and working fine, but in the last week, although the emails are marked as junk, they stay in their Inbox folders.

The junk folder is showing a few messages, but it's 3.5mb in size. If I repair it (right click, properties, repair) a whole host of messages appear in the folder, all not marked as junk. I can delete them all, compact the folder, but it still shows as 3,5mb. If I repair it again, those messages re-appear.

It's a real pain having to manually delete these messages, and by having to click on them in the inboxes, there is a chance that I may invoke a virus as well.

Is there a way to fix the junk folder, other than rebooting the pc (to stop the folder being used) and deleting it?

Any ideas what might be causing this to happen and to reoccur?

Chosen solution

next time (and there probably will be) save a copy of the junk folder cause if it is that small I will get you to email it to me so I can have a look at exactly what the corruption is. My hope. Identify a cause the the traces in the corruption.

re: junk. I can delete them all, compact the folder, but it still shows as 3,5mb.

when you say 'delete' do you mean 'empty junk' ? To clear the Junk folder: right click on Junk folder and select 'Empty Junk' and then right click on Junk folder and select 'Compact'.

You do not need to open an email in order to delete it. To manually delete several messages: Hold down 'Ctrl' key and use mouse to select the various emails. This will highlight those emails. Right click on any highlighted email and select 'Delete' from the drop down menu. Then right click on the Inbox folder and select 'Compact' to remove all traces of deleted emails from Inbox.

then remove them from 'Deleted' folder. right click on 'Deleted' folder and select 'Empty deleted'

If I right click on the folder and empty junk it does nothing. If I hit repair it brings back a lot of older messages not marked as junk. If I compress the folder it seems to do nothing either, the size remains the same.

I can repeat this time after time and it does the same thing, somehow it's stuck/corrupted.

I just fixed the problem by rebooting the pc, deleting junk + junk.msf and opening TB to re-create them. Now junk is being processed again ok, but every few months the same problem recurrs.

Good thinking Matt, and I almost did save it. I agree, if the cause of the corruption could be determined, a fix would be most welcomed.
