Managing Firefox CPU Usage [Firefox 31.0, running on Windows 8.1 Pro].
This is an answer, not a question, which I hope will help those with high CPU usage problems who are searching the support forums.
Here is the configuration of Firefox 31.0 that keeps my CPU usage to a minimum. The background: Firefox was using up to 45% of my CPU even when minimised. I put it into Safe Mode and established that the usage went down drastically, to around 15% or less, and around 5% or less when minimized. Then I started it normally and ensured that I only enabled those that I really need or like out of the long list of addons that I have accumulated. I am very pleased with its performance now. It remains easily the best browser out there.
Typical Firefox CPU usage with 30 tabs open:
Minimized: < 5% Window open: Typically < 20% with Adblock Plus, Flashblock, and NoScript operating everywhere.
Extensions:
Adblock Plus HTTPS-Everywhere DownThemAll FlashBlock Internet Download Manager integration module for Mozilla LastPass Lightbeam NoScript Session Manager Stylish
Plugins:
All set to "Ask to Activate" except the following, which are set to "Always Activate":
Java(TM) Platform SE 8 U5 NPLastPass Shockwave Flash
Appearance: LavaFox V2-Green (Zigboom Designs), with about:blank - Orion's Belt and about:home - Orion's Belt.
So running in a low-resources mode is definitely possible, but you may need to do some experimentation! It may help, if you continue to have problems, to reinstall Firefox 31.0 completely, deleting all user data, using Revo Uninstaller Free, and then try to emulate the above configuration first.

Hi jmward, Thank you for your answer! Have you considered presenting this as an add on collection?
Hi guigs2, and thank you for your message. No, because I was unaware of the collection facility, but I will do so if you consider it useful. I have also done some CPU and benchmark testing that I will include as part of the description, which demonstrates the performance possible without add-ons. Regards, Martin Ward
Of course, that link from the previous post will take you to a login screen for the add ons site. You may have to sign up for an account if you have not in the past. Then you can create a private or public collection. I hope this helps.
