Mozilla works with advertising partners to place sponsored shortcuts and Sponsored stories on the new tab page. These are always clearly marked and you have control over whether they are shown on your new tab. Privacy is fundamental to Mozilla’s mission, and we only work with advertising partners that meet our privacy standards for Firefox.

Sponsored Shortcuts

Sponsored shortcuts is a feature available in specific regions, including the U.S., Canada, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the UK, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, India, and Japan; other locations will be added over time. Mozilla works with advertising partners to place sponsored shortcuts on the default Firefox home page and new tab page that would be useful to Firefox users. Mozilla is paid when users click on sponsored shortcuts.

What data is shared?

When you view or click on a sponsored shortcut, Firefox sends anonymized technical data to our partners through a Mozilla-owned proxy service. This data does not include any personally identifying information.

What data is collected or shared?

Sponsors: We share aggregated data with our third-party ad platform, Kevel, related to the sponsored items you see and click so that advertisers can see how many people have clicked on their articles. Sponsors don’t receive any additional data from Mozilla, except for an aggregated total count of impressions and clicks that a particular item receives. Lastly, we don’t collect or share personally identifying data through these interactions with sponsors.

Firefox: By default, when Recommended stories are displayed on your New Tab, we collect information about how many times they appear and how many times they’re clicked.

How do I opt out or delete this technical and interaction data?

Sponsors: When you opt out of viewing sponsored stories, we also treat this as a request to delete your technical and interaction data that is shared with Kevel and relevant sponsors. To opt out of viewing sponsored stories:

  1. From the three-dot menu of each Sponsored story, select Manage sponsored content to launch the Settings to the correct section.
  2. Or, in the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click Firefox and then select Preferences or Settings, depending on your operating system. Select the Home panel.
