After the latest update (to version 29), Firefox's default home page search bar has been completely non-functional. Whether I type enter or press Search, nothing happens. Another (possibly related) problem is that the "Restore Previous Session" button is never present. I also cannot restore the previous session by clicking on the History option (it is always greyed out).

When looking up how to start in Safe Mode, I found out how to reset Firefox to its factory default. I did that and Voila! Problem solved.

This also happen to me. But after using Firefox for a while, the problem went away. Use FF, close it, use it, see if that helps.

Did the problem happen after the switch to version 29? I assumed that was what caused it for me, but I can't remember if the two events (problem and update) coincided exactly. I have tried restarting Firefox, clearing the cache, reinstalling Firefox, and restarting the computer, all to no effect.

I had this and other problems with v29. But after a while everything was working again, I hope. BTW;

I found that after Firefox v29, a LOT of my settings and add-ons were changed / reset. Try this; Start Firefox in Safe Mode
While you are in safe mode;
Firefox Options > Advanced > General.
Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration. Check ALL of your setting. Then restart.
