Thunderbird unresponsive

Thunderbird becomes nonresponsive for 30 sec. up to five minutes.

I sent this in before and was told to start my computer in safe mode. I did and Thunderbird worked fine.

Went back to normal mode and, of course, the problem is still there but I notice that in the bottom left corner, it says it is downloading X message of YYY messages when it becomes unresponsive.

I am using a University Gmail account with Thunderbird. Please help me as I love Thunderbird but this has been going on for months and I am about to give up.

I used to get this sort of problem when I used Agent. I managed to identify that the problem was in the email that Agent was trying to download (don't ask me why, I have no idea).

All I used to do was to go online and delete the email. Then Agent was fine and continued downloading the rest.

It didn't happen often but I assumed that some coding in the email was causing the problem.
