How do I keep incoming messages from disappearing?
Incoming messages will appear in the Inbox window at the top of the screen. They are archived locally in my inbox, supposedly. Next time I open Thunderbird, the data in the inbox window, and then, POOF!! they're gone. Why? And where do they go?

Check under the View menu that Threads is set to All and not Unread.
It is, and has been, set to "All". So that's not the answer.
