Why did the install give me version 39 instead of the latest version 41

I just installed Firefox and I use the Norton password vault. However my Norton password vault is not working and when I check the extensions I am told that Norton toolbar is incompatible with Firefox 39. How is this fixed as I have a lot of passwords in the Norton vault. I see that there is a version 41 and is this compatible with the Norton tool bar

Firefox 39.0 is the latest Release as it came out late Thursday last week and can be seen at www.mozilla.org/fireafox/all. The 41.0 is not due for Release for a while yet as it is currently in development on the Aurora aka Developers Edition channel as 41.0a2.

Norton only supports current Release at most and not the Beta, Aurora or Nightly channels.

You need to do live updates in Norton to update the Norton toolbar extension for Firefox 39.0. You likely have a older version of the Norton extension meant for say Firefox 38.0.5 or a older release.

Firefox 39 is the latest Release version, which the Norton extensions for Firefox are compatible with. Firefox 41 is the current alpha 2 Developer Edition / Aurora channel version which is about 12 weeks away from being released. It is intended for developers and 'testers' to help the developers by reporting perceived faults or Bugs; not intended for 'normal' users. As far as Norton being compatible with Firefox 41 goes, I doubt it - they don't even support the Beta version and release their "new versions" of extensions just hours after Mozilla releases a new Release version of Firefox.

Sometimes Norton users need to run the Norton Live Update repeatedly to get all applicable updates. Might be best to see Norton support for help with that, if the Live Update isn't gettin' the job done. I have no recent experiences with Symantec / Norton software; last used it in 2001 - over similar issues with their updates working intermittently.

FF 40.0.3 is the last compatible version with Norton Toolbar. I uninstalled version 41 and only come back to it when compatible. Wish it doesn't take too long.

It is not Firefox that is made compatible with Extensions but the other way.

To explain why Norton is not able to support Firefox 41.0 https://community.norton.com/en/forums/firefox-41-and-norton-toolbar-compatibility https://community.norton.com/en/blogs/product-update-announcements/firefox-41-and-norton-toolbar-compatibility

There was a change that Norton has yet to update for. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mozilla.dev.extensions/B3H3j6FRVms

Hi ArnSussek, Mozilla has already disclosed the security flaws in Firefox 40 that were fixed in Firefox 41, so it is not ideal to stay on Firefox 40.

If you absolutely cannot use Firefox without the Norton extensions, you might consider switching (temporarily?) to a different variant of Firefox called the Extended Support Release (ESR). This is designed for companies that require a longer cycle time between feature changes, and currently is based on Firefox 38. It will get security updates over the next several months, but not get new features, so changes related to add-on compatibility will not kick in for quite a while.

If you decide to try it, here is how I suggest installing it:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 38.3.0esr from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Fx40

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\Fx40

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Success?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that old folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \Fx40\Plugins
  • \Fx40\browser\plugins
