If a webpage is no longer available, Firefox for iOS can help you check whether the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine has saved a copy.

When an archived version is available, you can open it directly from Firefox.

Use the Wayback Machine

When Firefox displays a page unavailable error, such as DNS errors, you may see a View Archived Version button.

  1. Open a webpage that displays a supported page unavailable error.
  2. Tap View Archived Version.

  3. Firefox checks whether the Internet Archive has an archived version of the webpage.
  4. If one is available, Firefox opens the archived page.
  5. If no archived version exists, Firefox displays a message that no snapshot is available.

How it works

The Wayback Machine is provided by the Internet Archive, an independent organization. Firefox sends the webpage URL to archive.org only when you tap View Archived Version. Mozilla does not automatically submit webpage addresses for checking.

Things to know

  • Archived versions are available only if the Internet Archive has previously saved the webpage.
  • Some webpages cannot be archived.
  • The Wayback Machine may not be available in every country or region.
  • If Firefox cannot connect to archive.org, you'll see a message explaining that the archived page couldn't be reached.
