which version do I have? can I check it somewhere?
re my browser - I do not know which version it is. Some websites tell me they are not supported by what I have, e.g. one requires F'fox version 9 - question: how do I know what I have and how to upgrade?

Follow this:
Click on: FIREFOX icon > HELP > ABOUT FIREFOX
Then you will see your Firefox version and if needs to update. If so you will be asked if you want to download the lastest version.
You can find the latest Firefox 20.0.x release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:
That will avoid to download multiple full version updates (Firefox 12 and 20).
