for some time i have had a problem where firefox is slow to download a site/page. it is not always the same site/page and may happen anytime on any site. if i hit the stop 'x' and then the refresh arrow the site/page loads immediately. i have researched this on the internet and implemented every applicable speedup setting with no significant change. i am running the latest version of firefox (it has also happened on other versions) on windows 7 home premium on adesktop with a core i5-2400 cpu (4 cores @ 3.1ghz). i am connected to a belkin router via a 1gb realtek pc1e gbe controller with the latest drivers. my internet connection is adsl provided by iinet.net.au

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

Thanks for the hint but i have been working on this for a while and believe i have already tried that. i have also previously deleted my profile to allow a new one to be rebuilt. i have just noticed that "advanced systemcare" has turned on surfing protection. as i never pay any attention to it's ratings i have removed it to see if this has any effect. will update again in afew days.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

disabled all the addons and response to new web page load was fast as hoped for. re-enabled individually until the cause was isolated - ADDBLOCK PLUS - now deleted from my firefox setup and all appears to be working as expected. will keep a check on page load response for a few days and update this question if there is any change
