Why doesn't a favourite open in the first New Tab after FF is launched?

After I launch FF (15) there's a New Tab - fine. But when I open a page (e.g. from a URL elsewhere or from a favourite) it opens in a second tab.

I keep having to close the first tab 'cos it's not used.

FF didn't behave like this 3 or 4 versions back.

How can I restore sensible behaviour? (about:config?)
