Unable to launch after update, keeps asking to reboot

Fred Beck replied

After running an update, when launching Thunderbird it says "Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Thunderbird. Do you want to reboot now?". Rebooting does nothing, I'm prompted with the same message. Tried re-installing the latest version - it gives me the same error message before re-installying, and also un-installing the version I have on my PC - it also prompts me to restart to finish the earlier upgrade.

Hello there ALHANEYS82

This issue persists because the Thunderbird installer has a lock on a data file or thinks there are more updates pending, even after a system restart.

Repair Close Thunderbird and make sure all its processes have ended Open File Explorer and go to: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird (or C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird). Delete the entire Thunderbird folder. If you see an error message, restart your computer and try again. Be sure to empty the Recycle Bin afterward.

Deleting corrupt update data.(optional move). Press on that win -button + R. Type : %localappdata%\Thunderbird\updates and press enter, delete the complete map.

Reinstall clean Take a new download from our site and reinstall. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/desktop/

It should work now It should now work after the polluted update/installation folder has been erased.

I have this same problem. My guess is that one of the millions of updates was running in the background when I shut down my laptop. The links in my start menu and task bar are both broken. I looked for the folder in my %localappdata% but it was not there. I have no updates folder. I looked in the roaming Thunderbird folder with the same results.

Based on another find in a google search, I looked for, and removed all of the parent.lock files. However, I still get the same result when I try to install the latest version of the software (152.0). Based on how sensitive Thunderbird is to updates (I usually lose access to my first account after an upgrade a random period of time - hours to days...), and how frequent they are, I've very afraid of losing access to email accounts, email files, contacts, addons, and other settings.

Summary of current situation. Cannot run Thunderbird, yet it is still on my laptop. Cannot update as it wants to restart the computer to finish an install. Windows cannot find the uninstaller. There are no .exe files in the Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird folder as all have .moz-upgrade behind them.

Thinking of switching mail handlers... At a minimum, I plan on disabling updates in the future as this is definitely Thunderbirds Achilles heel. That is, if I can ever recover from this.
