Hello, I have Facebook Container installed (Windows 11) on my desktop. However, if I click a link to a FB page, say in an email or on a webpage, Facebook opens onto the current tab and makes it a container tab. Since I can not go back once FB is opened in the container tab, I have to open a new tab and go back to the original (pre FB) webpage. This is the only time this happens.

What settings can I change so that the Facebook Container opens Facebook into a new tab, not on top of an existing open tab?

Many thanks for the millions of us that are computer challenged.

Thanks for the reply. Learned something new (Ctrl+click). Now if I can just remember to do that ;-). I would hope that FB Container updates so it always opens in a new tab. It really is frustrating and I would think (again, a bit computer challenged) it would be an easy fix. Thanks again.

Hi JN,

That’s a great question — and you’re right, this is how Facebook Container currently works by default. When you click a Facebook link (for example from an email or another website), the add-on automatically opens it in a Facebook Container tab, and it reuses the current tab instead of opening a new one.

Unfortunately, there’s no setting in the extension yet to force those links to open in a new tab. But here are a few workarounds that can help:

1. Middle-click or Ctrl+click the link

If you Ctrl+click (or Cmd+click on Mac) the Facebook link, or middle-click it with your mouse wheel, Firefox will open it in a new tab automatically — and the Facebook Container will then load it inside that new tab. This is the easiest manual solution.

2. Copy and paste the link manually

Right-click → Copy Link → open a new tab → paste → Enter. That ensures your original page stays intact.

3. Use a “force new tab” add-on (optional advanced fix) There are extensions such as Open link in new tab or Open link in new tab, next to current that override default link behavior. If you install one, you can configure it to always open Facebook links in a new tab before Facebook Container does its work.

So for now, Ctrl+clicking the Facebook link is the simplest and most reliable way to keep your current page open while letting Facebook Container do its job in a new tab.
