my second laptop has stopped recognising my thunderbird password - i've reset the password on main comp, taken it off put it back on - uninstalled and reinstalled thunderbird - nothing works

That is a per profile thing so it is not really going to e used across two different machines.
Or do you mean passwords stored in the password manager https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/password-manager-remember-delete-change-tb
