I can't play a video when logged into a website - see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1371380

I'm sure it is not Firefox as I have also tried Chrome and Opera; same problem. How can I debug this and find out why the video cannot be played ?

I see there is 'Remote Debugging' and 'Browser Console' under 'More Tools'. How do I use these or other tools to find out what is causing the problem please ?

It is a membership site, and only by logging in can the problem be replicated. The screenshot for your distro - all the versions you have are more recent than mine.

Hi

Are you able to share a link to the video that you are trying to view?

No sorry. It's a private membership site, and needs login access to (attempt to) play the video.

Could this help? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enable-drm

I doubt it, DRM is already enabled and most of the articles I have seen for fixing video problems mention to make sure it is enabled.

Make sure you have the latest FFmpeg and libavcodec packages installed.

Thanks, I read through the articles from the links and tried all the suggestions, but the video doesn't appear. (Even cleared the DNS cache). Possibly I should have made this question "Video doesn't appear" ?

The only thing I haven't tried is installing the latest FFmpeg and libavcodec packages. It seems the ones I'm using are a number of versions behind. I read a number of articles on installing the latest on Ubuntu 20.4; these seemed a similar method:

https://www.osradar.com/install-the-latest-version-ffmpeg-ubuntu-debian/ https://kb.hostperl.com/knowledgebase/install-latest-ffmpeg-on-ubuntu-20-04/ https://www.hostnextra.com/kb/install-latest-ffmpeg-on-ubuntu-20-04/

The method at https://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2022/02/install-ffmpeg-5-0-ubuntu/ is less involved but does a "full upgrade" , which may remove other currently installed packages.

I may consider installing openSUSE in a VM, as it has version 4.4.1 of FFMpeg, which appears to be the last before version 5 (https://software.opensuse.org/package/ffmpeg-4)

FFMpeg do give a guide for compiling on Ubuntu ( https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/CompilationGuide/Ubuntu ) but it looks involved.

I missed the part about other browsers. What site? We can't see any videos without logging in right? If so, then it's wrap for me.

Yes, that's right. No one can see the video without being logged in, and I can't see it even when logged in. So, that is why I started this thread. By "debug" I mean, Browser console or other tools so that I can debug it.

It was a Vimeo privacy issue for videos that were embedded on other sites. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1379845
