Thank you christ1, it was my AV blocking the connection. My AV is ESET and the solution is to disable SSL and then re enable it after this all works as expected.

What is your anti-virus software?
Also, please post your Troubleshooting Information.
At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button 
, then select Help > Troubleshooting Information.
Press the "Copy text to clipboard button" and paste the information into your reply.
