Firefox loosing or forgetting cookies
I have a new credit card and new credit card company and the log in is being difficult in firefox. The log in page is https://firstnationalcc.com/CardMemberServices/Default.aspx when I go to log in firefox does remember the user name and password, then when I go to log in it brings me to the page https://firstnationalcc.com/CardMemberServices/Services/User/RememberComputer.aspx it prompts me to enter my cards expiration date and security code, and has a box to check to remember the computer after that page your in your account. it will only remember the computer for about 3 hours then after 3 hours if you go to log back in it brings you to the https://firstnationalcc.com/CardMemberServices/Services/User/RememberComputer.aspx page again after logging in and wants you to enter the information again. I have called the bank and they said it must be a problem in firefox, so any ideas ?

Three hours, hmm. Did they say how long the authentication cookie should be good for?
My guess is that the site is instructing Firefox to set a more persistent cookie -- perhaps a week, month, or year -- but something is causing it not to persist. For example, that might be:
- If you are using private windows and you closed the last private window
- If you have Firefox set to keep cookies until you close Firefox, and you closed Firefox
- If you have Firefox set to clear history when you shut down, and Cookies are included among the history being cleared
- If you use a cookie management extension that expires cookies after a certain time
- If you use external security/privacy software that cleans up browser cookies from time to time
Could you tell me what your privacy settings are on the Options page? You can check using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > Options (or gear icon)
- (menu bar) Tools menu > Options
In the left column, click Privacy. Then on the right side, if you have "Firefox will: Remember history" you can temporarily change that to "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history" to view your detailed settings.
Note: If you have "Firefox will: Never remember history" then you have automatic private browsing and cookies are not remembered between sessions.
The defaults are:
[X] Accept cookies from sites Accept third-party cookies: Always Keep until: They expire
And "Clear history when Firefox closes" is not selected.
What do you have?
HI, I have it at the stock settings with' show windows and tabs from the last session' selected so when I open firerfox it will open pages to : godaddy email, outlook express email, ebay, TD bank, Birkshire bank, easthampton bank, cardmember services, netgear router log in page. the only page that auto log logs in is the outlook express, the rest will ask for the user name and pass word, some of the pages remember the user name and pass word but others remember only the user name or nothing, so both must be entered. according to first national their system should remember the pc after that box is checked for at least a year, the bank manager told me she set up hers 2 months ago and it remembers her, so it must be my pc, lol.
but its the only site acting up , ebay I have a 128 bit encrypted pass word I do not even know and other then in the file I have for it the only other place it is, is in a firefox cookie and firefox remembers that crazy ' pass word' as its more of a jumble of characters then a pass word.
I have : [X] Accept cookies from sites Accept third-party cookies: Always Keep until: They expire
And "Clear history when Firefox closes" is not selected.
Do you have any extensions installed that might touch cookies? If it's not obvious from the Add-ons page, you can copy/paste a list from the Troubleshooting Information page.
Add-ons Page
You can view installed extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then your list appears on the right, enabled extensions on top, disabled on the bottom. Does anything look like a potential culprit?
Troubleshooting Information Page
To copy/paste your list of extensions:
Open the support information page using either
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
- (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
- type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter/Return
Scroll down to the Extensions heading. Then select using the mouse from extensions through the end of the table listing the extensions and copy (Ctrl+c).
Then click in a reply and paste (Ctrl+v). It will look a little messy but don't worry, we're used to it.
The laptop came with HP simple pass but I never used it so I uninstalled it. in add on's it has

Okay, I see you have two extensions from Avast. Could you try disabling them for a day and see whether that makes any difference? As noted above, on the Add-ons page, click Extensions in the left column to gain access to those.
Hi, I tried that, I disabled both of them, went to the web site made sure I could log in and shut down the pc, I just tried to log in and no joy. I left them disabled at the present time.
So while you are on the site, after yet again identifying your computer, could you double-check the cookie expiration? To do that:
While viewing a page on the site, try either:
- right-click a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
- (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
- click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button
In the dialog that opens, the base part of the site's address should be filled in automatically at the top and you can click a cookie and look at its detailed properties in the panel at the bottom. In particular, the last line is "Expires". Does the disappearing cookie have a future expiration date, not just the end of the session?
Assuming that is correct, and Firefox is not set to clear cookies at shutdown, some external software may be clearing it. Do you use Advanced System Care, CCleaner, or other system utilities that touch browser data?
their putting in 6 different cookies with their web address for the site
name expires
_ga Saturday, March 3, 2018 6:40:36 PM _gat Thursday, March 3, 2016 6:50:36 PM ASP.NET_SessionId At end of session EA......[ has a code in it ] At end of session .ASPXAUTH At end of session 7.....[ has a code in it ] Friday, April 22, 2016 5:11:43 PM
I think the first two are for Google Analytics and not any internal function of the bank site. That would mean only the last cookie is persistent, and it certainly should survive shutting down Firefox and starting it up again if cookies are not getting cleared.
Next time it wont let me log in, in a few hours. Im going to check them and let you know if any of them disappeared
I found the missing cookie, this one 7.....[ has a code in it ] Friday, April 22, 2016 5:11:43 PM is gone when I go to log back in and it wont let me log back in. the other 5 cookies are their just this one disappears.
it should be noted when that cookie vanished, the computer was turned on, it did not go to sleep or hibernate. firefox was left open and was not closed it was sitting on the tab for outlook express email. Only that cookie is affected, so if their is a program erasing that cookie it is targeting that cookie alone and no others. I only installed avast anti virus no cookie controllers or mal wear attackers or any thing like that.
You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.
Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, cache, and exceptions, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.
You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.
If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.
OK I just did that, now their are 3 cookies instead of 6, Ill have to wait until later to see if it works or not.
That did not work it still looses the cookie
so no clues or ideas then why it looses this cookie ?
Hmm, could you check whether that cookie is getting removed before you go back to the site? You can call up the cookies dialog on another page and edit the address at the top, or backspace the site out of the search box to see all cookies.
I'm wondering whether the site itself might be removing that cookie because its content is no longer valid. For example, let's say hypothetically you were using a proxy, private VPN, or Tor to connect to websites, your IP address or other parameters related to the cookie might have changed between visits, in which case the site might consider it suspicious that you have that old cookie and remove it.
One of Firefox's settings sometimes causes problems with sites, and you can check/adjust it here:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
In the left column, click Advanced. On the right side, click the "Network" mini-tab and then the "Settings" button.
"Auto-detect proxy settings" causes some websites to require password re-entry. The default of "Use system proxy settings" or choosing "No proxy" usually resolves it, if that's the problem.
yes it was their i went log in and the cookie disappeared and it asked me for the second log in again
The default of "Use system proxy settings" was selected, so I changed it to "Auto-detect proxy settings" just now , so ill see if that works.
