gContactSync deleted my address books, can I undelete them

The above addon somehow deleted all my contacts in 3 address books. The author has an article that tries to help but is somewhat confusing. I was able to find the .MAB files and they appear to be my contacts. Does anyone know how to restore contacts from these files? I'm close to desparate.

Thanks,

Can you explain what you did and what happened? Did you read the FAQ before installing the extension? gContactSync does not touch the Personal Addressbook. It creates a new address book and you can choose a name for it.

christ1,

I had installed the addon a few weesk prior and couldn't get it to work. Time spent on the support forum for it didn't provide much help since the author is virtually the only one to respond and is gainfully employed elsewhere. As you may know, the addon is free.

I did read the FAQ but it wasn't much help. I did figure out that the addon didn't touch the Personal Address Book, so I moved all my Contacts into a new address book that would sync with my Gmail contacts. Once I did that and clicked on Sync, my contacts disappeared plus nothing synced with Gmail. That's when I discovered my contacts had been deleted.

If the .mab files are named anything else besides abook.mab or history.mab (the default TB address books), you can import them to TB by using this add-on: MoreFunctionsForAddressBook. (How to install). Open Address Book, then Tools/MFFAB/Actions for addressbooks/Import addressbook from mab file. Or, right-click an empty spot in the Directory Pane, MFFAB/Import addressbook from mab file. If the contacts have been deleted, but the address books are still displayed in Address Book (in the Directory Pane), you could also try right-clicking the address book, MFFAB/Recover/Restore.

sfhhowes,

Thanks for your suggestions; however, I don't think my addresses survived the attempt at syncing. There are 3 .mab files, abook, abook-1 and abook-2. However none of them are anywhere complete.

The original AB names remained in the Directory Panel but contained less than 5% of my contact names, etc.

What would be the best way to start over? I'm thinking of deleting my one book that does not use a default name (Personal Address Book), create a new one and Import from Gmail which brings up another question. When I export from Gmail, it asks me what format to use. Any suggestions?

Thanks again,

jbacinti

Looks like it will also take some keyboard work but it's probably all I can do for now. I don't think I'll be using gContactSync again.
