I have set 'restore previous session' but it won't

I have followed the instructions to set 'restore previous session' (for the question 'when Firefox starts' I have chosen 'show my windows and tabs from last time'). But when I reopen Firefox and hit History, 'restore previous session' is not active. How do I activate this? (I am on Windows 8.)

Are you clearing any history automatically as Firefox closes?
