Cannot send or receive messages: nothing changed, settings verified
Can send/receive with Gmail webmail, but not TB. Have changed IMAP settings as per https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78892?hl=en&ref_topic=3397500 (though hadn't knowingly changed anything to cause problem). Rebooted.
Use 9 Gmail accounts & 1 ntlWorld, all of which get same error msg when trying to send: "The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server smtp.gmail.com timed out." Troubleshooting info:

To diagnose your problems with Thunderbird, try the following:
- Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
Thanks for that! I can send/receive in Safe Mode.
In Normal Mode, I disabled
- the 3 avast services
- the 3 Comodo services
- Windows Firewall (already disabled due to having Comodo)
- the 3 Skype services (update recently installed)
- the 1 TeamViewer service (update recently installed)
- the Silverlight plugin (update recently installed).
I restarted, then ended process
- CCleaner64.exe (recently installed)
- OUTLOOK.EXE *32 (update recently installed).
avast & Comodo were still running in Processes, access denied.
Still couldn't send/receive. Sometimes, error msg isn't about timing out, but 'unknown reason' (unsure of when).
Have been Windows updates, but thousands of other Thunderbird users must've had those too.
What do you suggest?

Suddenly found I could send/receive in Normal Mode, so added 1 service/process/option at a time. Eventually found a culprit - sort of.
When avast Mail Shield is off, Thunderbird will send/receive. However, when it's on, and all the other options off, it won't. Every time.
Bet you can't explain that!
It is easier to explain that you think, and one of the reasons we suggest operating system safe mode. People do not believe us when we say most connectivity issues are anti virus caused.
I can not speak to avast specifically, but I can tell you most anti virus programs have a database, either as a firewall component or in the case of avast internally, that describes the "trusted applications" and any special actions they need to take so play in the sand box happily. Unfortunately these guys get very specific about what constitutes "XXX" Trusted application a change in version number from 31.1.1 to 31.1.2 is enough to bowl some of them over. The others use an MD5 hash of the actual executable I think. The net result new version and the AV goes nuts.
Some anti virus programs also insert themselves into the communications flow as a proxy. So when Thunderbird connects to mail.gmail.com. What actually happens is Thunderbird initiates the connection, but the proxy is already in the way. so it receives the request and passes it along but not gmail is talking to the proxy, not Thunderbird. This allows the anti virus to scan what is supposed to be an encrypted connection as it has all the necessary keys (it is in the middle) to decrypt the data stream. All good, except is the anti virus drops the ball, then Thunderbird gives you silly error messages that rarely make sense and your mail stops.
There is another more insidious issue here. As the anti virus is decrypting all communications into plain text to scan it, it is very easy to use government pressure to insert a backdoor into the scanning to siphon off unencrypted information. Perhaps not an issue for you or me. My mail is boring, your probably is to. But when handling sensitive data, anti virus is actually a security hole.

Oh and see my notes on ccleaner... http://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com.au/2012/06/thunderbird-and-ccleaner-or-my-settings.html
I have not looked in a long while. They may no longer be valid concerns. Perhaps you can tell me :)
1. This is all a bit technical for me, but Thunderbird can now send/receive. Avast's response was
Avast is monitoring email but can sometimes interfere with Thunderbird, due to the email platform's default SSL protocol encryption used to establish secure connection to mail servers.
You need to create mail certificate and import to Thunderbird:
Go to Avast > Settings > Active Protection > Mail Shield Customise > SSL scanning > Export certificate > export to desktop
Then import mail certificate into Thunderbird:
Go to Thunderbird > Tools > Options > Advanced > Certificates > View Certificates > Authorities > Import...
Locate Mail Shield certificate exported to desktop > Open.
When asked if you want to trust Mail Shield certificate: 'Trust this CA to identify websites' > OK.
In Certificate Manager, select Servers and ensure no entry titled 'avast! Mail Scanner'. If exists, delete all related certificates. Click OK.
Options window: OK.
Instead of being asked if I wanted to trust Mail Shield certificate, it said "This certificate is already installed as a certificate authority." Avast's response was to disable SSL protocol in Avast by going to > Active Protection > Mail Shield Settings > SSL scanning > uncheck.
Your email of 23 Dec 02:07 UK time was too difficult for me to follow, so I put to Avast using your wording, "Is there back door into scanning, to siphon off unencrypted mail?" Their reply was only "Avast is not instantly blocking unencrypted mail." I don't understand what you suggested well enough to follow up. Maybe you can help?
2. Re CCleaner settings:
a) When Thunderbird opens, what's displayed in preview pane is a webpage, isn't it? Further, there's an extension which enables browser tabs to open in Thunderbird by clicking email links.
b) CCleaner's been run while Session's been checked. Unchecked now, but how do I get back desired settings?
c) Only problems which are since about the time I ran CCleaner are that, i) using Unified Folders view, if click on Sent or Archives then drag my pointer down the messages, 1 by 1 they disappear. They're still in respective account folders. If click elsewhere then Sent or Archives again, emails are there again but same happens. ii) new sent/received emails are duplicated in Drafts. If deleted from Sent/Inbox, they remain in Drafts.
