How to find bookmarks and folders created after certain date?

Something messed up my bookmarks library by mixing up the folders as well as the messing the folder structure. I would like to restore my months-old bookmarks backup but I would also like to export and maybe later merge bokmarks and (especially!) bookmark folders I created after the hiatus happened.

Those "window" bookmark folders might also belong to a session management add-on. You might check with the author on whether there is a quick fix for that.

Regarding the dates: each bookmark does have that information, and in the Library window (Ctrl+Shift+b) you can add the Added column to see it. If you do a search for http in the box at the upper right of the Library window and then click the Added column heading to sort by that date, you can see the most recent. Unfortunately, there's no obvious way to export in that order.

If you have an old JSON backup in plain or compressed (.jsonlz4) format, or if you want a more readable file of your current bookmarks for comparison, I have a tool to convert the JSON backup file to an HTML-format ("Export") file:

https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/bookbackreader.html

Not sure whether that would be useful, since the tool doesn't sort by date or show the date added. Maybe there is another web app or add-on for that.

I added a checkbox to show the date added after each bookmark and folder in the export. Perhaps it's overkill, but...

Are you using Sync to Sync the bookmarks as that can be a possible cause ?

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

If you use Sync then best is to reconnect one device at the time and wait for the initial Sync to finish before connecting another device once you have fixed the bookmarks.
