I used to use firefox extensively in college and there was a neat feature where I could put in the domain without the domain extension and it would go to that website, example: just putting "facebook" in the browser would go to www.facebook.com. Note, i had also disabled browser history and suggestions so it was not through that. I believe the feature was under browser somewhere in about:config

That is part of a feature to fixup a typed URL. You can check the browser.fixup preferences on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.
