AOL has horned in and automatically appears when I bring Firefox up. I don't want to give AOL this space. I don't know how to take it out.

You should be able to remove a toolbar that is installed as a Firefox extension by going to the Firefox -> Add-ons -> Extensions list. See this article for detailed instructions:
