Why does Firefox 20 Beta 1 default launch screen search not work. In Firefox 19 Beta it defaulted to Google.

I went to about:config and reset the "browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone" to default. That seemed to work after I restarted Firefox. But the next time I rebooted my computer, it reverted back to no search. I made the change again and restarted Firefox and it was working again. For kicks and giggles, I rebooted again and the issue came back. Any suggestions?

hello, can you address it by installing the search reset addon can resolve the issue: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/ (a restart of the browser is necessary afterwards)?

please also update your plugins (some of them are out-dated & have security vulnerabilities that are actively & widely exploited on the web).

The addon appears to have resolved the issue. Thanks.

I would like to update my plugins, but it's a work laptop and I don't have admin rights to do so. I've requested the updates, but they don't seem to be in any hurry to do so.

I thought this resolved the issue, but I just restarted firefox and the problem is back.

when I log back in, browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone is set to 20.0. If I change it to default, everything works fine after I restart firefox, but if I look at browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone it is set back to 20.0 and the next time I restart it no longer works.

I am assuming the 20.0 is the firefox version, but I have no idea where it's being set.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
Some security software has virtualization or sandbox features that may cause problems by protecting and restoring files in the Firefox profile folder.

What is the value of the browser.search.defaultenginename pref?

If you do not keep changes after a restart then see:

The problem is on a company laptop which uses Microsoft forefront endpoint Protection. If this is the problem I'm stuck with it. although it didn't affect any of the Firefox Beta 19 builds.

The Default browser is set to Google.

I renamed my prefs.js file and create a new one. While resetting all my preferences I found something interresting. If I selected the Never remember history option or use private browsing option under the custom option on the security tab in options, after the restart the Default search was missing from the default launch page. If I set it to remember history, after I restarted the default search would be back and working.

This may be a bug in Beta 20.

Looks like this was fixed in Firefox 22 Beta 1.
