windows 7. I was on ff5 and life was wonderful. one day while clicking the okay to open firefox button, it was as though I was hijacked into a 6.0 upgrade. from that moment on, my yahoo home page "modified" to some beta version, all of my email page display fonts (in both aol and yahoo) have reduced to a size so tiny I can barely read it, any web browsing freezes about every 5 minutes no matter what I'm doing - whether composing mail, playing a crossword, writing this forum paragraph, switching tabs, opening drop down menus......anything done while the browser window is open. yet, I close out firefox/mozilla and instead open internet explorer and life is totally back to normal. font sizes are large, pages dont freeze, my yahoo page is back to normal............wtf?! I've rolled back to 5.0, back to 3.6 and still I get the freezing, page reformatting, email downsizing, etc. this is AWFUL! it has affected my entire web experience. I dont wish to use IE as it has too many issues of its own.

what did firefox do to my puter and how can this be fixed?

I should have stayed with FF7 but started to feel comfy & got tired of the messages to upgrade to FF8 so I caved & did the 8 download.. Wow am I ever sorry.. All I get is freezing & hangups.. I had to remove Addons & reinstall others & had to remove a program it wasn't compatible to "Google's Open Office" (sad to see it go).. Still have issues & I'm really angry this AM from it.. I'm tired of removing Addons I like & use & trying others to compensate for it.. I just got this laptop in December 2010 Windows7 & tend to keep my laptops clean & uncluttered so this FF issues is really ticking me off big time..

Well whenever you dump your files or clean the cache it signs you out of everything you were signed in to that's why you have to sign on again to everything.. I used to have my pc set up to defrag automatically every night but then I stopped that & just do it myself every night because you have to be logged on for the defrag to take place & if I was using it & that started it slows the pc down 'big time'.. So I just defrag myself every other night & do the file dumping or cleaning the cache as they say every night just before I finally log off & give my pc a rest..

You could try the disabling an Add-On one at a time to see which one may be causing you issues. I know FF auto installed one to keep the browser looking like FF4 which everyone seemed to like its called Status-4-Evar; you should see it in your Add Ons Manager page under the Extensions tab but leave it there is my suggestion.

I did have two additional tool bars that I used they were www.iGive.com & www.Goodsearch.com & they were expressly for charities.. You select a charity of your choice & every time you use one of their search engines or make a purchase online thru one of their participating merchants it accumulates $$$ from the merchants & then sends quarterly donation cks to the charity of your choice .. All free to you.. I found that these tool bars for some reason where causing real freeze issues with FF so I finally had to bite the bullet & remove them.. So if you have anything like that you may want to see if the extra tool bar is causing you issues & possibly remove it.. Sorry for the run on sentences I must be in that mode today..

I think its fixed! I tinkered around with all those add-ons and discovered this one called yahoo applications state plug-in. I'd not seen it before. I enabled it and that brought back my classic yahoo home page and got rid of that gawdawful beta test page. then I'd saved an article I'd read a week or so ago about a site that aids in "bloatware" that accumulates garbage from deleted and uninstalled stuff. turns out its a super registry cleaner, and also tweaks other performances and so far my system is running like a charm and I've been on FF for over an hour with ZERO lockups. go to tweaknow.com if you have a PC (macpaw.com for mac users). download the version called tweaknow powerpack 2011 by selecting download from the menu bar (not the ad banners). its fairly self explanatory from there and I didnt have to figure out anything weird. I just let it rip. it took a while doing its deep clean and also gives you a report of what its doing and what's in there that its getting rid of. everything seems great and system is running like a charm. I'm soooooooo happy I could scream. thank you all for all your help and support.  :)

This is the PC cleaner I use & when you download the PC cleaner it comes with a registry cleaner & you can also download the Defragler too from the same site

They do periodic updates but send alerts it's my sons fav so I downloaded it & use it but its great & not hard to use or understand either..

Also if you're bothered by ads or pop ups FF has a really great AddOn called AdBlockPlus & I definitely recommend it if you don't have it.. Ads & pop ups are history according to them and they are right.. Don't be thrown by the odd URL name or you can do the download from FF AddOn Manager list

http://adblockplus.org/en/

I am thrilled for you that everything is working well & enjoy the 7 I know I am & I'm a complainer when it comes to my PC... Glad we could help & learn from each other.. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. And I'm Pat...

I might have discovered the solution without starting over with all your places and bookmarks.

Right after i installed 7.0.1 over a week ago, every 10-30 min When i would be watching videos online, it would freeze for 20-30 seconds. Firefox would say ( Not responding) both firefox and the plugin container process would be very large memory files. I tried to go back to Firefox 5.0. No avail it would still freeze.I tried to disable the plugin container . no good. I tried to adjust memory or cache or plugin settings in “about:config”.Nothing fixed it!

I finally discovered why my Firefox 7.01 was periodic hanging fix. It is something to do with some of your personal files. download this this add on and install it https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/

or you can Google "places maintenance Firefox"

After you install the add on, restart Firefox.go to "tools", then "add ons" and then click “extensions” tab ,then click' options" on the "places maintenance" entry. choose "ALL' or just "expire" and hit "execute", then wait until its done., restart Firefox. should be fine then and all my bookmarks, customizations ,settings, and history stays untouched!

After i did this my Firefox did not freeze once for over 3 days straight. Might not work for everyone. I already read thaqt Mozilla is aware of the problem and are working on a fix it in the full version of 8( the 8 beta did not fix the problem for me) . But they said this is a good temporary fix at least,( might be permanent)

For me at least ,Firefox works fine in 7 now. perfect actually. And many people i saw on similar forums had similar problems.

Enjoy. Hope this helped

@imajakov . TY for this info.. I hadn't had any issues with FF7.0.1 until a couple of days ago when it started hanging up & freezing. The only way for me to stop that for that moment was to "fool it" by opening Task Manager & even though all I did was view usage on it once I opened TM & closed it the screen unfroze & that not responding msg disappeared.. I am going to try your suggestion.. Thanks again..

Why do we have to go thru all this B S, you are paying programers to develop new software for these faster machine. Maybe you need to start check out the programers and not pay them until their product as been out for at least six months.

Upgrade, Upgrade, Upgrade...

I had s similar problem. Now I have VISTA and Firefox 7 and things finally work but my older WinXP & Firefox 3.6 can NOT do Yahoo Mail and other sites.

Tools > Options > Advanced > Update > and turn it OFF!

It is mostly the sites that change and not your browser that causes problems. THEY want you to UPGRADE! So go with Firefox 7 and turn off automatic updates. As for VISTA & Win7 - ARGHHHH!!! and with Apple going with Intel and Windows compatibility - ARGHHHH!!!

I miss WinXP and the older Motorola based Apple's...
