Firefox has just started to sign me out of websites such as GMail whenever I restart it. I have already check my settings and I have tried to have the "Clear history when Firefox closes" setting unset as well as having it set and then having all the associated settings cleared. Both ways I keep having to login again. When logging in to GMail Firefox is also asking for a USB security key for a two factor authentication which I have never used and never set up in any software.

This could be about a bug that can be related to a corrupted cookies.sqlite database. You can check this in the Manage Data dialog whether it shows that the last use of cookies is many years in the future.

Thank you cor-el, that seems to be the case I'm facing. Most of the cookies in the list are last accessed February 17 2036. I surely wouldn't have found this very easily myself, so thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction and to the other question.
