I wanted to change my smtp settings
I am having terrible trouble with Gmail. I keep getting my account has been compromised security alert. I have had to disable apps that are deemed not secure by Gmail. I then read an article that said change your smtp settings. However, I cannot find these on the two gmail accounts when I go into account settings in Thunderbird. I have tried to change the settings in Gmail because it is not getting rid of any mail. I have to physically go into my gmail account and delete them. I never had the problem before. Gmail obviously thinks that Thunderbird is not secure. So what can I do? It is getting beyond a joke going into gmail and changing my password all the time. I have two accounts with gmail so you can imagine I am not a happy bunny and all I seem to do these days is resolve email account issues. The port I have for gmail is 995 default. What is port 110, which I always used to have and didn't seem to have any issues whatsoever? I just seem to be going round in circles and if I change anything in Gmail and come out after saving it, the next time you go back in it has reverted back to its original setting. Any help would be very helpful and appreciated. Julie

Port 995 is for POP and gmail are trying their hardest to put people off using POP. 110 was used previously for POP but is a plain text connection meaning that it's easier for third parties to intercept and read your email. Using port 995 means your data is encrypted and therefore more likely to remain private.
Google's current choice of authentication for email is known as OAuth2 and it is available only with IMAP and SMTP. If you insist on using POP then you will have to use the regular methods, which as part of their FUD policy, gmail deem to be "less secure". I have to say that when recently trying to set up gmail to use POP in Thunderbird, I couldn't get the account to connect.
So, to make life easier for yourself, set the account up afresh, with IMAP, SMTP and using OAuth2. For now, don't delete any of your previous POP based accounts.
Setting up from scratch is often easier than adjusting an existing account. But if you really want to check your SMTP settings, they are all grouped together under "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" at the very end of the list of accounts in Account Settings.

Thank you so much for your help. Because I am thick can you please explain oauth2 and do I have to manually config this or will it automatically connecto to this when I change from pop. I am assuming using Oauth2 will still enable me to receive email on my thunderbird account. I have just had this message from gmail from you and only the heading came down. I had to request the rest. That has never happened before. Thank you.
