Hello Firefox staff.

I was recently doing some research on the effects of napalm. Your site had a number of photos of soldiers burnt by this substance (many of whom had died) but it appears these images have been removed. To access these, I typed in "images for soldiers burnt by napalm", but when I tried this tonight, nothing seemed to come up.

Could you kindly confirm that they have been removed and if this is the case, explain as to why please?

Thanks

hello, firefox or mozilla doesn't run any site like this. you'll probably have to take your question to the search engine provider you are using...

Sorry - I'm positive I located such an image site on firefox recently on a number of occasions, but it seems to have disappeared tonight.

These will be disturbing images http://lmgtfy.com/?q=soldiers+burnt+by+napalm Then click on the Images option towards the top of the page. By default it will be all and you will see mainly text items.

if that does not work maybe you have some form pf content filtering on your computer, or by your service provider. You may as already stated need to check search settings or policy of your chosen search engine.

thanks for that John. I tried using a laptop in another location but the images didn't come up - only the general search headings that I'd got earlier. I tried doing an image search for two other images such as the New Zealand parliament house and these came up at the top of the page as usual so the image function appears to be working. It just seems odd that that particular topic would suddenly vanish.

Maybe that "other location" has content filtering enabled, as is done many times on public WiFi (such as a coffee shop or a public library) connections for blocking porn or other objectionable images that may be upsetting to people in a public setting.

No - I've just realised - the university site I was using earlier has a blocking notice that comes up on the pc screens if material (such as pornography) is accessed. The uni wouldn't put a block up for that type of material as it's not considered 'inappropriate' largely as it's historic archival material. If it was blocked, a notice would come up advising the person attempting to access it. This is really strange as when I found out that at least 100,000 people were incinerated by napalm during the Vietnam war, I began to wonder where all the photos and film was on sites such as youtube with the exception of Kim Phuc. I then realised that it has clearly been censored by the US government.

Just to be clear, Firefox itself is a web browser and not a search engine. A search engine site would be for example google.com or bing.com

If you are using the default Homepage about:home you can change what search engine it is using. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-your-default-search-settings-firefox.

Thanks James - i tried that but it doesn't work unfortunately. It's got to the point of becoming ridiculous - you'd think that Kim Phuc was the only Vietnamese to be affected - her name keeps coming up under a general search. I wouldn't be surprised if the US Department of Defence had these images pulled off the internet - maybe they're planning to use the stuff again and don't want any publicity.

I think we can probably rule out any conspiracy theory by the US government & I think like you the-edmeister is in the USA. Possibly some more information would enable us to understand more clearly what you are; or are not; seeing.

  • What search engines have you tried so far ?
    Please list them.
  • Do all of them fail to show these images ?
  • What search engine does your Firefox use by default ?
  • At present are you using your Uni to connect to the internet ?
(Is that your usual method of connecting ? )
  • Please provide screenshots of the google search I linked to using LMGTFY
    1. As it first displays on your screen with the All tab
    2. After you click on the Images tab near the top
  • Have you got any form of parental control or filtering software active on your computer ?

Thanks John. I hope you don't mind but i'm not going to bother to provide screen shots etc - I'd suggest you try keying in the search words that I keyed in - if the images don't come up, you'll probably just get the same headings (with no images section at the top) that I've been getting. It's basically a matter of 'now you see it, now you don't, so the images have either been taken off or there is some strange 'bug' in the search function. I've tried using google, firefox (mozilla?), google chrome, and internet explorer to no avail. I don't have any blocking on any of the pc's or laptops I use - this wouldn't block images like that, I'm sure. No - I certainly haven't got any parental control on my laptop or other pc's either...! If a US government department asked to have the images taken off, it's not necessarily a conspiracy - it's just censorship if it's occurred. Maybe these sites decided to take the images off (remember - I've checked for other non related images and they come up - I just tried doing one for lamborghinis and they came up) for some reason. I couldn't imagine too many people searching images for napalm victims... Will try doing more random searches for other images in the meantime. Thanks for your help though.

Thanks for the reply, but without screenshots it is dificult to try to help you any further. The issue is something that; as far as we know; you see but others do not.

I see the images I would expect. You apparently do not. I do not think images have disappeared, for anyone else. I do not think this has anything to do with US government action. It is more likely something to do with your computer or your Internet provider.

There sure would be some conspiracy if a myriad of independent sites suddenly removed images !
