Just started experiencing loss of connectivity/pages not loading for no reason starting yesterday. After several minutes of the page tab showing "Connecting...", the tab finally goes to "Problem loading page" and then goes to a page that says "Secure Connection Failed". Closing and re-opening FF does not resolve. Rebooting WinXP resolves the issue but only for a few hours, then the loss of connectivity/pages not loading resumes. Please advise how to resolve.

please update to the most current Firefox ESR 52.2.1 - it contains a fix for an issue that sounds very similar like you're describing (in relation to using a proxy with NTLM authentication)

Updated to no avail. Eventually, the same issue started again. This appears to be a problem between XP and FF as I tested other browsers and there is no issue. Please advise asap.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that has effect.

You can check the connection settings.

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Are we sure this has nothing to do with Firefox is ending support for Windows XP?

I narrowed down the issue. It is a conflict between AVG antivirus software and FF. Once AVG starts to malfunction, FF becomes unusable.

Are you certain about AVG causing the issues? Have you tried reinstalling FF fully? Does disabling AVG fix any potential crashing issues? Is your AVG anti-virus updated to the latest?

That aside, AVG is slowly but surely becoming out of date, considering it was bought by Avast, we know where this is going. I suggest switching to a newer and a more reliable anti-virus for this occasion.
