Emptying Draft folders when no messages are visible
I've been getting this error message for sometime now: "There was an error saving the message to Drafts. Retry?" All my drafts folders are empty and I've used the compact and repair function on them too. After not finding anything here, I did a Google search and found an article on z-a-recovery.com which explained why 'Profiles>xxx.default>Mail>Local Folders' has both a Drafts and Drafts.msf among the hidden files. It also mentioned that "the total size of all emails stored in a single folder cannot exceed 4 GB."
The above mentioned hidden Drafts file shows 3.99 GB (4.2 billion bytes) in its properties. So I assume the automatic saving to Drafts while composing messages is failing because it's reached the 4 GB size. But since I can't see any content when I look in the Draft folders from within Thunderbird I don't know how to fix it. Can I just delete the Drafts and Drafts.msf files from the appdata folder? Will the program just create new empty files there? I'd also like to know if there is a setting to just stop the auto saving of a copy to Drafts or adjust how often the save takes place? Thanks.

That does seem to have solved the problem. It seemed like a reasonable thing to try but I didn't want to break the program by deleting something that was essential. Thanks very much for the support. Larrydonline

A 4 GB Drafts folder certainly is something unusual. I'd assume there are no actual draft messages in that folder you're still intending to send.
Close Thunderbird. Then delete both, the Drafts and Drafts.msf files underneath Local Folders. Start Thunderbird. Verify what folder is designated as Drafts folder for your account. Tools (Alt-T) - Account Settings - Copies & Folders - Drafts and Templates Compose a new message and try to save it.
The settings for auto save: Tools (Alt-T) - Options - Composition - General
