With the 5/19 update to version 52.1.1, there is a delay, sometimes slight, other times up to several seconds, for the message to display, both in the preview pane and full window. I have been using TB for many years, and have never seen this behavior.

I have restarted TB in safe mode, turned off my AV, restarted the computer, and reviewed the list of factors affecting performance suggested below by sfhowes; all had no effect.

The one thing that is consistent is the number of external links in the message. The more links, the longer it takes to display the message. This behavior is consistent across all accounts, all folders, and regardless of the number of messages in the folder. This has never been an issue in the past.

Running Windows 10, 64bit. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Who is the mail provider? Do you have Windows Search enabled in Tools/Options/Advanced/General?

There's a comprehensive list of factors that affect performance:

Each email is taking up to 30 seconds to display and if I switch to another then back again, that's 1 minute 30 in total. This looks very definitely a Thunderbird issue and not outside factors - for example, it is suggested that an AntiVirus app could be to blame - with AV completely disabled, performance is the same, unusable. This morning I was happily using the previous TB version, no issue at all. Where can I download v45.x to get back to where I was?

The previous version can be downloaded here. The fact that the number of links affects performance suggests that the junk or scam detection of TB or a 3rd-party program is involved.

As an experiment, I just installed prior versions 52.0.1 and 45.8.0. The problem of slow display performance disappeared with version 45.8.0. As far as I am concerned, this confirms that this is a TB 52.x.x issue, and not caused by my Anti Virus or other add-on.

I assume that version 52 has added some sort of scanning of embedded links which is causing the slow display. Does anyone know of a setting that can turn this scan function off?

To those of you experiencing this issue, if you have not started Windows in safe mode, experience tells us we cannot conclude that Thunderbird is at fault.

I have downloaded and re-installed 45.8.0. All is perfectly well again.

Please don't insult the intelligence of long-term TB Users by suggesting 52.1.1 does not have a fault, it clearly does even if that fault is a new incompatibility with the system environment.

45.8.0 is good. 52.1.2 needs to do the same as that release, install and run without issues and stay on screen.

I'm writing this to be completely clear ...

I didn't say there can't be a problem with Thunderbird. What I'm saying is NOTHING short of 5 minute test in Windows safe mode absolves non-Thunderbird software. AV software is a common cause of slowness. And we have plenty of years of real world examples. When a user reports that a problem occurs in safe mode, then we have a potential starting point for an investigation.

I did restart in safe mode and that did NOT resolve the issue with TB 52.x.x, so I think we can safely assume the fault is with TB 52.

As I said above, if there is a way to turn the TB scan off, that would be fine with me.
