Bing comes back every time I remove it and restart Firefox. I tried many times, even removing it completely from my system, but it keeps on coming back as a default setting... Both in the separate toolbar and as the "background" search engine in my browser. Is this a new policy?? It's kind of horrible. I may switch to Chrome if this can't be solved. Hope you can help. Thanks, MKos

Hello,

If you recently installed a program such as Skype, if you do not uncheck certain boxes it automatically sets homepages to Bing. You can change it back by clicking the dropdown menu in your search bar (it will likely be a Bing logo) and selecting Google from that list. Also be sure to uninstall the Bing Toolbar once again from:

  • Tools > Add-ons > Extensions

After restarting, try installing the Search Reset Tool. This add-on will reset the preferences back to the default (Google) and then uninstall itself.

For further information, please read Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page.

Did this fix the problem? Please let us know!

If you find that you can fix the problem as long as Firefox stays open, but it resets to Bing the next time you start it up, there are other possible explanations for that. This article has many of them: How to fix preferences that won't save. Another common culprit is Advanced SystemCare, which protects you from unwanted settings changes by rolling them back after each session, which can lock in unwanted changes.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
