Can't register a new Gmail account (with separate domain) despite successful OAUTH2 process

Hello,

So, my company want to trash their Exchange server for Gmail accounts. Welp, OK... but Thunderbird (last version) doesn't cooperate.

I tried to add a new account with the correct information. I set the IMAP/SMTP of Google as this is an other domain, SSL connection and OAUTH2 on both servers as needed. The Google window appeared, login and password is fine, I clicked on Authorize.

But Thunderbird doesn't want to create the account because of a sudden login/password issue.

The login/password is fine, I tried it on the browser and I did succeed the OAUTH2 process so this is not the issue. The Google account states that Thunderbird is indeed authorized.

Cookies are authorized.

I tried to change the password for something more stupid.

Heck, I even recreated a new profile without changing anything. In desperation, I even tried using the standard password method after activating the Less Secure Application in the Google account.

Thunderbird still refuses to connect to this account, with the same login/password error.

I don't get it.

Does someone have a solution before I shoot this retarded bird ?

Your authorization on the oauth flow is done in the web page context (port 443) with pages served by Google. The account connection occurs using mail ports.

My guess is you are running into security software. A software firewall is most likely, or a VPN (most of them do not support anything but web traffic and providers like google simply refuse connections that are not from where you told them you were).

If that is sounding a lot like you antivirus product you may well be right. They are the common cause of disaster in mail account configurations.

Hello. Sorry for the late response.

The problem still exists. I even tried with a laptop which doesn't have ANY active antivirus (I even disabled Windows Defender by force) but Thunderbird persists to say that the credentials are incorrect, despite not being the case.

I remember being able to add a GMAIL.COM account to Thunderbird without issues in the last three months for a friend, but this was a standard account. Here is a bit different.

I begin to think that maybe there is something on the other side. I don't know if it is possible to restrict the users to a limited list of mail clients. If it is possible then maybe Thunderbird isn't included.

I should try with Outlook in a VM. I hate this client but this is just the time to check it.

So... With Outlook, I get a sort of password loop. The OAuth2 window appears, ask the email/password and ask if I want to authorize Outlook, then ask the email/password and ask if I want to authorize Outlook, then ask the email/password and ask if I want to authorize Outlook, then... endlessly.

The problem isn't Thunderbird. I will send some emails to get the bottom of this.

Oups, wrong link but this issue can be considered SOLVED... in a way.

The origin of the problem is the IT division. I asked them about that and they said that it is on purpose. It seems that Google offer a way to forbid the usage of any external client with all professional addresses.

Annoying, but I will have to do with it until I manage to convince them.

Thunderbird was never the issue.
