Downloading files in FF 58.0.2 blocks them and appends an alternate data stream

On FireFox Quantum 58.0.2 64-bit, downloading files on my computer is now flagging them as external downloads, much like IE tries to do on a server. This additional flag makes it impossible to open the download without right-clicking the file and clicking the UNBLOCK button. While the extra safety might come in handy, I really don't want this, and this is one reason why I don't use IE from my servers!

Further, as I copy the downloaded files from my local HDD to my NAS, I get a new error message with the text "The file XXXX.exe has properties that can't be copied to the new location. Are you sure you want to copy this file without its properties?" If I have just downloaded 10 different files and I drag&drop them to my NAS for permanent storage, I now get 10 separate dialog boxes with this text. This does NOT make life any easier. Researching further, we see that this is caused by the appending of an alternate data stream to the file (that indicates that the source location is untrusted), which is not supported by the NAS.

I did find a 6-year-old thread which discussed changing the Config value " browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone ". However, the current release doesn't seem to have this setting any more.

Could you please explain what is blocking them/flagging them ? What program is the UNBLOCK  ? Not seen or heard of it in Firefox.

Something that is stopping your transfer to another drive (NAS) would not be Firefox. I have 1 NAS among my h/drives and have no issues.

It sounds more like security software. Windows just ported all of Win10's Windows Defender to Win 7. I would suggest you check your installed windows files from Programs & Features and the KB#'s since the issue started to confirm that. As well please check Windows Defender Options for new settings that may need to be adjusted.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

If you have ever downloaded a file from Internet Explorer on a Windows Server, then you should know what I am talking about. Downloads are getting appended with an alternate data stream called Zone.Identifier:$DATA that identifies the source as the Internet. Windows then uses this tag to display a message in the EXE's Properties page (on the disk) that the EXE is blocked. (See attached.)

I have never seen this in Firefox as well, though a search on the 'Net showed several old posts from 2008 and 2012 that discussed the browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone config setting. (Search on that, and you'll find them quickly enough.)

However, you might be right that an OS change/patch enabled this, as I am now seeing the same thing from Chrome. I don't use Defender, but perhaps Microsoft enabled it just to piss me off.

How about the link so others can see if they get what your getting. And I download in IE, Chrome and Edge and also FF and don't get what your getting. Unless you use W10 Defender is not enabled by default. That sounds more like a file issue itself more then anything related to the O/S or Browser incidentally here.

I don't need to provide a source link -- it is now occurring on EVERY EXE download that I do -- even on files downloaded from my own web/FTP site. Even better, the alternate data stream is NOT on the files on the FTP server! This tells me that the download process is adding the alternate stream. If the browser is not adding the additional field, then either the OS or AV solution (Vipre) is doing so. As my OS has not been updated recently, and since Vipre HAS been updated recently, we may have found the culprit.

Yes it does sound like a Security issue. You should check their forum for any issues and or post the issue there. You might just want to give your self a check just in case : https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/ and Hitman Pro installed as 1 time only : https://www.hitmanpro.com/

Let us know the results and g'luck on Vipre
