Clicked "Inbox Again" and lost emails. Where did they go?

My father and I are both linked to his gmail account in our respective Thuderbirds. He complained that he lost messages dating back a few months. I went in and saw them in the trash folder. I highlighted several emails, right clicked and chose the 'Move to "Inbox" Again' option thinking they would sent back to the inbox. That did not happen. Those emails are no longer in the trash and I have no idea where they are. Can anybody help?
