Starting yesterday, Feb. 24, Firefox suddenly started signing me out of everything every time I close the browser and reopen. It is not and never has been set to do that or empty cookies/cache until I direct it to do so on my computer. I have checked all settings. What is going on and how--in simple language--do I fix this? (Can't even understand the troubleshooting directions, too much jargon.)

"Too much jargon".... ;-)) I think it would help to have examples of sites that you are logged out of. What are your cookie and history settings? see screenshot

Normally I right-click something to get a screenshot. That doesn't work with Firefox, and I don't see another way to do it. I get signed out of: hotmail, gmail, amazon, netflix, etc. and have to sign in again each time I open the browser. My settings are not set to delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed, meaning that box is not checked. Firefox is set to remember history. I have run the troubleshooter and cleared opening cache as well as "regular" cache in privacy-security settings. Before posting here, I cleared cookies and signed back in to everything. When opening sites this morning, I was once again signed out.
