Firefox freezing after update to 96.0

My Firefox updated to 96.0 yesterday. Since then it freezes frequently apparently checking for updates; no pages load during the freeze. After some time it decides it is up to date and Firefox starts working again, only to start checking for updates again after a few minutes and freezing again. A second installation on a laptop (also Windows 10) is behaving exactly the same. How do I resolve this? Thank you.
