Why won't Thunderbird import spam mail from my email server?

When I log onto my provider website to retrieve my email, there is always span in the spam folder (some are not really spam). The spam mail is not imported into Mozilla when I use it to import my mail (not in the junk or inbox folder).

Are you using POP or IMAP? POP only knows about the Inbox on the server. With IMAP the folders are on the server and you view them remotely from your computer or smart devices. You subscribe to the folders you want to see and unsubscribe to the folders you don't.

It is POP. I don't believe I can change that. Anyway around it?
