Problem with default program for opening .doc attachments
When I try to open .doc attachments, they open in Publisher. I've reset the defaults for program opening, and even changed .doc to 'Word' manually - no success. Outside Thunderbird there is no problem in opening .doc attachments with Word.
Any suggestions welcome!

Did you reset inside Thunderbird or outside? In Tools/options/attachment /incoming You might find .doc associated with Publisher. If so delete that lign.

Many thanks, Gnospen! I was unaware that there were independent default setting within Thunderbird but your steer helped me find them.
