When has firefox required direct access to the workstations camera?

Historically, access to the camera was only available through plugins like Flash. The Flash DLL runs in the plugin-container.exe process; if protected mode is in effect, it may also run outside of that process.

I suspect that access through native APIs (e.g., navigator.mozGetUserMedia) is rare on the desktop. I don't recall getting any requests for it so far personally.

Hi. I believe what you say to be true. that firefox itself has no reason to access the camera. however I noticed on the Android version it request permissions for camera/microphone.

There should be no operational difference between workstation Firefox or Android should there?

I think the camera is one of the most popular features of a smartphone. For efficiency, users may want to capture a photo directly to a form on a web page rather than having to attach it from the gallery. Not that I can recall ever doing that...
