Firefox Sync lets you access your bookmarks, passwords, tabs, and more across all your devices. The easiest way to turn on Sync is to sign in to your Mozilla account from the Firefox toolbar or menu.

Once you sign in or create a new account, Sync is enabled automatically. This article will walk you through the sign-in process and how to manage what gets synced.

If you no longer have access to the email address associated with your Mozilla account, or you are setting Sync up again after recovering or reinstalling Windows, see the troubleshooting sections below.

Sign in or create an account to start Sync

  1. Click the Sign in button in the Firefox toolbar.
    • If the button is hidden, open the menu (≡) and click Sign in at the top.

  2. Firefox will open a secure page at accounts.firefox.com.
    • This special view ensures that signing in or creating an account will automatically enable Sync.

Enter your email address

  • If the email is already linked to a Mozilla account, you’ll be asked to enter your password.

  • If the email is not registered, you’ll be prompted to create a password to set up a new account.

If you no longer have access to the email address associated with the account, see I no longer have access to my email address.

Confirm your new account (if applicable)

If you’re creating a new account:

  1. Firefox will send a confirmation code to your email address.
  2. Enter the code to finish setting up your account.

  3. After confirming, you’ll see a screen that says “Sync is turned on”, sometimes with a confetti animation!

Note: If you’re signing in with an existing account, you may see a prompt to create a recovery key. This is optional. Sync is already enabled at this point, and no further setup is needed.

  1. Click the menu button (☰).
  2. Select Settings.

Connect additional devices to Sync

A device could be a mobile device (such as a smartphone or tablet) or a desktop computer For more on mobile devices, see:

To connect another desktop computer, just sign in and let Sync do the rest. To sign in, you'll need the email address and password you used in the previous section.

  1. Open Firefox on the second computer.
  2. Click the menu button (☰) > Sync and save data.
  3. Click Sign in and enter the same Mozilla account credentials.
  4. Your data will sync automatically.

If you're already signed in (see How do I know the status of my sync?), click Sync Now to start syncing immediately.

Troubleshoot Sync sign-in and account access

I can't find the Sign in button

If you don't see a Sign in button in the Firefox toolbar:

  1. Open the Firefox menu.
  2. Look at the top of the menu for Sign in.
  3. If it isn't there, open the toolbar customization options and check whether the account or Sync control has been removed from the toolbar.
  4. You can also go to Settings and look for the Mozilla account or Sync section to sign in.

The exact location or wording of the account controls can vary by Firefox version.

I no longer have access to my email address

Your Mozilla account uses your email address to verify account access. If you can no longer access that email address, you may not be able to complete sign-in or account recovery using that address.

Try these steps:

  1. Recover access to the email account through your email provider, if possible.
  2. Once you regain access, use the email address to sign in to your Mozilla account.
  3. If you are still signed in to your Mozilla account on another device, open your account settings and add or update an email address before losing access to the current one.

Do not create a new Mozilla account expecting it to restore data from your previous account. A new account does not automatically contain the data from your old Sync account.

I recovered or reinstalled Windows and my Firefox data is missing

Recovering or reinstalling Windows can result in Firefox using a new or empty profile. If you previously used Sync, signing in to the same Mozilla account can restore the data types you had enabled for Sync.

  1. Install or open Firefox on the recovered Windows installation.
  2. Sign in with the same Mozilla account you used before the Windows recovery or reinstall.
  3. Open Settings > Sync and confirm that the data types you want are enabled.
  4. Allow Firefox time to sync your data.

If your bookmarks, passwords, or other data do not return after signing in, check whether you were using the correct Mozilla account and whether the data type was enabled for Sync previously.

For data that was never synchronized, see Recover user data missing after Firefox update or reinstall.

Important: Sync is designed to keep Firefox data available across devices. It is not a complete backup of every Firefox profile file. Data that was never synchronized may need to be recovered from an old Firefox profile or another backup.

Disable Sync for previously synced devices

To disable Sync on a device:

  1. Click the menu button (☰).
  2. Click your account email at the top of the menu.
  3. Select Sign out.
  4. Choose whether to keep or delete synced data from the device.
